What HDPE is and why it works
Every piece we sell is made from high-density polyethylene, a UV-stabilized recycled plastic lumber that needs almost no maintenance over its lifetime.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
HDPE is a UV-stabilized plastic lumber made from recycled material, primarily milk jugs, detergent bottles, and other post-consumer plastics. It is extruded into boards and then milled into furniture using the same woodworking techniques used on hardwood.
The key difference from painted wood: pigment is mixed into the material at the extrusion stage. That means the color runs all the way through every board. When the surface scratches, it does not show bare wood. It shows the same color underneath.
HDPE does not absorb moisture, does not rot, does not splinter, and does not support mold or insect activity. It has a lower expansion-contraction rate than most hardwoods, which means joints stay tight over time.
Stabilized against fading and degradation from sun exposure
Does not absorb water, impervious to rot
Tested to -40°F without cracking or warping
Resistant to most household cleaners, bleach, and solvents
Keeping it looking new
There is not much to it. Here is the complete guide.
Regular Cleaning
Warm water and mild dish soap with a soft-bristle brush is all you need. Rinse well and air dry. Do this once or twice a season depending on your environment. Dusty or pollen-heavy areas may need more frequent cleaning.
Stubborn Stains
HDPE is chemically resistant. For stuck-on grime, tree sap, or bird droppings, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) works without damaging the material. Rinse thoroughly after.
Restoring Shine
After years outdoors, HDPE can develop a light chalky film from UV exposure. A plastic cleaner or automotive scratch remover applied with a soft cloth will restore the appearance.
Winter Handling
Poly furniture does not need to come inside for winter. Leave it out, cover it, or store it. The material handles all three. If you store it, a dry garage or shed works. No special preparation required.
Hardware Check
All fasteners are 304 or 316 stainless steel and will not rust. On heavily-used pieces, check and tighten bolts once a year. Most pieces will not need it.

Common Questions
Will the color fade?
Less than you would expect. UV-stabilized pigment means the color is in the material, not painted on. Some very slight lightening may occur over many years of direct sun exposure, but it takes a long time and is subtle. A periodic cleaning usually restores the appearance.
Is it safe for food contact or children?
HDPE is the same material used in food-safe containers, cutting boards, and playground equipment. It contains no toxins, does not leach chemicals, and is safe for all household use.
Can I pressure wash it?
Yes, on a low setting. Keep the nozzle at least 12 inches away and use a wide-angle tip. High-pressure washing up close can dull the surface, but the material will not crack or degrade.
What is the weight capacity?
Our standard Adirondack chairs hold 300-400 lbs depending on the model. Dining tables and benches are rated for 600-1,500 lbs. Specific weight ratings are listed on each product page.
How does HDPE compare to teak or cedar?
Teak and cedar look beautiful and have real warmth to them. HDPE has neither the grain nor the scent. What it has is permanence: no cracking, no rot, no maintenance cost, and a longer usable lifespan than almost any natural wood you can put outdoors.
Can I repair it if it breaks?
Most structural repairs can be done with HDPE-compatible adhesive or replacement hardware. We stock spare hardware and can source replacement boards for most pieces. Call us.
